Local Wildlife

Austin is a city of one-million plus people. Looking at it however, you would not know the wild life that lives here. In the heart of Austin we have all kinds of critters and wild life. And since we don't use pestacides and even have a small section set up for wild life we get all kinds of visitors and some even call our yard home.

This week we had a neighbor frantically ringing our door bell. We were afraid someone had ht one of our cats. To our surprise she pointed out a 2 foot snake that had been in our yard and had moved into our neighbors. It did not appear poisonous, but we were not going to take chances. We herded it into a barrel and carried it to the local creek so it could do it's thing. After a little research we're pretty certain it's a Texas Rat snake.

These guys were hanging out under a pile of wood and debris, and were not too happy about having their home removed. We are in the process of setting up a rocky area with plenty of places for them to hide and sleep. Yes they are snakes, but they eat bugs.

A couple of the local birds. The one on the ground is not too bright as we have many prowling cats.

Not sure what this guy is, but he's probably a dweller in the sycamore tree. We found him on the bar and when we put a leaf from the tree in front of it he immediatly began to chow down. After scooping him up we moved him back the tree.

We suspect this is going to become a Monarch Butterfly. We'll be keeping our eyes on it!
